Julia Fullerton-Batten’s book “The Act” was given the esteemed Award of Excellence by Communication Arts and will be published in the Photography Annual 59. Of the 3,401 entries submitted to the 59th annual photography competition, only 127 were selected by a jury of respected creative professionals, representing the work of photographers, videographers, design firms, agencies, publishers and in-house creative departments. “The Act” portrays the lives and skills of women who voluntarily engage in the UK sex industry. In celebration of this year’s Winter Olympics held in Pyeongchang, South Korea we’d like to share with you a fascinating personal project by Julia Fullerton-Batten.
In this series of images, Julia street-cast young Korean women dressed in the traditional Hanbok, and photographed them against the backdrop of its modern austere capital city, Seoul. The settings illustrate the country’s history, the political tensions between South and North Korea, and its cultural traditions, such as the tea ceremony and the game of Badminton.
